make status bar interactive

It would be nice if the user could directly manipulate the status bar:

  • change the syntax highlighter (if several are available)
  • change the document type
  • line ending type
  • tab width (currently not in the status bar)

Attached are two screenshots of how this looks like in GNOME's gedit editor.
