Preferences dialog: "Indentation" is confusing

Description

See attached screenshot.

  • What is meant by "Indent Spaces" vs. "Tab Spaces"?
  • What does it mean of both are set to 8, or if they are set to different values?
  • Is this about interpreting tab characters? Or tab keystrokes?
  • if I activate "Detect indent settings for each file", what is the point in having general settings?
