Debug-Client-0.24 tests hang

This is perl 5, version 16, subversion 2 (v5.16.2) built for darwin-thread-multi-2level on OS X 10.8.3. It's a perlbrew build.
Most of the Debug-Client tests hang. t/05-io.t is the first to hang. It's inside Debug::Client->_initialize() waiting indefinitely at $sock->accept().
t/eg/05-io.pl starts and PERLDB_OPTS is set to the right host and port. However, when I run it manually I get this:
$ /Users/schwern/perl5/perlbrew/perls/perl-5.16.2-threads/bin/perl -d t/eg/05-io.pl > "/var/folders/w9/x6vrm0zs4hnbs4nj_p0qdp980000gn/T/AmNM2Firey/out" 2> "/var/folders/w9/x6vrm0zs4hnbs4nj_p0qdp980000gn/T/AmNM2Firey/err" Loading DB routines from perl5db.pl version 1.37 Editor support available. Enter h or 'h h' for help, or 'man perldebug' for more help. main::(t/eg/05-io.pl:4): $| = 1; $
I had a ~/.perldb but I've moved it out of the way.
