more flexible (project aware?) recent files

Description

I often work on one main project with many files - eg. currently on Padre - but occasionally I need to open files in a separate place (in a separate project or just stand alone files)

I'd like to be able to open that other files that reside in a totally different place of the file system.

Having a list of 50 most recent files or even 20 might be too much

One idea I thought is to have project specific recent files so we can keep the 10 most recent for 10 projects.

Better ideas are needed here.
